AT ATSHOWING SEPTEMBER 10-19, 2010

"ORPHANS"

by Lyle Kessler

Two brothers fight for their lives in this gripping production by playwright Lyle Kessler. Orphaned brothers Treat and Phillip live in a squalid Philadelphia tenement where dominant sibling Treat, fearful that he will lose his brother, keeps him imprisoned in their home by terrorizing him with tales of what would happen were he to go outside.

Treat meanwhile works the streets of Philadelphia as a violent petty thief where he meets Harold, a prosperous-looking drunk. Treat lures Harold to their home, whereupon discovering he's wealthy decides to hold him for ransom.

What Treat does not know is that Harold is a gangster and that both he and his brother are actually less in need of his money than his presence as a father figure in their lives. This is a heart gripping production that will leave you wondering when to laugh and when to cry.

Lyle Kesslers ORPHANS first opened August 31, 1983 at the Matrix Theatre, in Los Angeles, CA. In February 1985, it opened at the famed Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago, IL. The show was directed by Gary Sininse. Al Pacino was featured as Harold when the show finally hit Broadway at the Barrymore Theatre in 2009.

Length 1 hr. 45 mins.

ORPHANS IS INTENDED FOR MATURE AUDIENCES
